27% reservation for OBC in government jobs

OBC Reservation Policy: The central government clarified in the Lok Sabha on Tuesday that 27 percent reservation is available for Other Backward Classes (OBC) in government civil posts and services. The announcement was made by Minister of State for Social Justice and Empowerment B L Verma, which aims to provide equal opportunity to OBC candidates in government jobs and higher education. The government has also provided assistance like scholarships, hostel facilities and subsidy on educational loans under OBC welfare schemes.

The Central Government clarified in the Lok Sabha that 27 percent reservation is applicable for Other Backward Classes (OBC) in direct recruitment in government civil posts and services. Minister of State for Social Justice and Empowerment BL Verma said that this reservation policy is implemented as per the guidelines of the Department of Personnel and Training. The objective of the policy is to provide equal opportunity to the OBC community in government jobs and higher education.

OBC Welfare and Education Schemes

The minister said schemes like pre-matric and post-matric scholarship, National Fellowship in Higher Education and interest subsidy on educational loans for foreign studies are in place for OBCs. Apart from this, assistance is also available for hostel and top class studies of students under YASASVI and SHREYAS-OBC Scheme. These steps are reviewed and updated from time to time for the social and educational upliftment of the OBC community.

Census and data details

Minister of State for Home Nityanand Rai said that according to the 2011 census, the total population of Scheduled Tribes is 10,45,45,716. However, sub-tribe-wise data is not published separately, but the information is collected as per the ST list of every state and union territory. It helps in transparency and planning of government policies.
