Sanju Samson’s father’s lessons power World Cup heroics

India’s emphatic victory in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 final against New Zealand will be remembered as a historic moment for Indian cricket. Amid the celebrations at the Narendra Modi Stadiumone name stood out — Sanju Samson whose explosive batting powered India to a commanding win.

Samson scored a brilliant 89 off 46 ballshelping India post 255/5the highest total ever recorded in a T20 World Cup final. India eventually defeated New Zealand by 96 runssecuring their third T20 World Cup title and their first on home soil.

Samson’s match-winning innings

Opening the innings, Samson set the tone early with fearless stroke play. His innings included eight towering sixes and several crisp boundaries, putting New Zealand’s bowlers under relentless pressure.

He received strong support from Abhishek Sharmawho smashed 52 off 21 ballsand Ishan Kishanwho contributed 54 off 25 balls. Their efforts marked the first time three Indian top-order batters crossed fifty in a T20 World Cup final.

Although James Neesham briefly revived New Zealand’s hopes by taking three wickets in an over, Shivam Dube’s unbeaten 26 off eight balls pushed India to the massive total.

India’s bowlers then completed the job, with Jasprit Bumrah delivering a sensational spell of 4 for 15as New Zealand were bowled out for 159.

Discipline rooted in childhood

Despite the accolades, Samson attributes much of his success to the discipline instilled by his father Viswanath Samsona former Delhi Police constable.

In a conversation with Ravichandran AshwinSamson spoke about how his father’s advice shaped his approach to cricket and life.

“My father would always tell me to carry myself like a leader,” Samson said.

Those four words — “carry yourself like a leader” — became a guiding principle for him, helping him maintain composure during high-pressure moments.

Sacrifices behind the success

Samson’s journey to international stardom was shaped by his father’s sacrifices. Recognising his son’s potential early, Viswanath Samson organised rigorous practice sessions and eventually made a bold decision to move the family from Delhi to Kerala to provide better cricketing opportunities.

The move proved decisive, as Samson soon gained recognition in domestic cricket.

From promise to global star

Despite showing early promise, Samson’s journey was not without setbacks. He initially missed selections in Delhi’s junior teams before establishing himself in Kerala’s cricket circuit.

His talent soon caught the attention of former India pacer S Sreesanthwho recommended him to the Rajasthan Royals franchise in the Indian Premier League.

Legends such as Rahul Dravid later acknowledged Samson’s exceptional ability, describing him as a player with “special talent”.

Years later, that potential has translated into global success, with Samson emerging as one of the defining stars of India’s historic T20 World Cup 2026 triumph.
