Air India increased fares, decided to impose fuel surcharge on domestic and international flight tickets.
New Delhi, March 10. Air India and Air India Express have decided to impose a fuel surcharge of Rs 399 on every domestic flight ticket from March 12, as the prices of aviation fuel ATF have risen due to the ongoing tensions in West Asia. Along with this, fuel surcharge will also be increased for international flights.
The new surcharge system will be implemented in a phased manner
In a statement issued by the airline on Tuesday, it was said that the new surcharge system will be implemented in a phased manner. In the first phase, a fuel surcharge of Rs 399 per ticket will be applicable on domestic and South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) flights from March 12.
The surcharge will be $10 for flights to West Asia, $90 to Africa and $60 to Southeast Asia, the statement said. All these changes will be effective from March 12, including flights to Singapore. There is currently no fuel surcharge on Singapore services.
“Air India Group today announced a phased increase in fuel surcharge on its domestic and international routes, which has become necessary due to the sharp increase in jet fuel prices due to the geopolitical situation in the Gulf region,” the statement said.
Since early March 2026, aviation turbine fuel (ATF), which accounts for about 40 per cent of an airline’s operating cost, has seen a sharp rise in prices due to supply disruptions, the statement said. “In India, this pressure is further compounded by higher excise duty and VAT on ATF in major metros such as Delhi and Mumbai, thereby impacting costs and putting significant pressure on airline operating economics,” it said.
For the avoidance of any doubt, the statement added that tickets issued before the above mentioned time will not attract a fresh surcharge, unless the customer wishes to change the date or itinerary, which would entail recalculation of the fare. However, no announcement regarding fuel surcharge was made by IndiGo, SpiceJet and Akasa Air.
