Why is Assam government changing the name of Fakhruddin Ali Ahmed Medical College?
Assam government is going to change the name of Fakhruddin Ali Ahmed Medical College. On Tuesday, the state government held a cabinet meeting, after which the name change of the hospital was approved. Now the name of the hospital will be changed to ‘Barpeta Medical College and Hospital’. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has announced this.
Chief Minister Himanta Vishwa Sharma said most of the government medical colleges in the state are named after the places where they are located. This medical college was an exception. Keeping the locality in mind, the government has decided to change the name. There is no other intention behind this decision.

All our medical colleges are named after their locations. We see this in the medical colleges of Guwahati, Dhubri, Silchar, Bongaigaon, Biswanath and Sonitpur. Somehow, the hospital at Barpeta was named Fakhruddin Ali Ahmed Medical College and Hospital, which does not match the naming format of other medical colleges. The Cabinet has decided to change the name of the institute to avoid confusion.
Why are the names changing?
Himanta Vishwa Sharma said, ‘Because of its name many people ask whether it is a private medical college. That is why today the Cabinet has decided to change its name to Barpeta Medical College and Hospital.
Are you angry with Fakhruddin Ali Ahmed?
Himanta Biswa Sarma has said that the government will take care of the honor of former President Fakhruddin Ali Ahmed. Will name some other institute after him. Only the name of the medical college will be changed.

Why the exercise of changing the name?
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma now openly pursues Hindutva politics. Elections are going to be held in the state in a few months. The minority population in Assam is around 34 percent. On one hand, while parties like Congress and All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) are trying to woo minority voters, Bharatiya Janata Party’s entire emphasis is on Hindutva. The exercise of changing the name is being linked to Hindu polarisation.

Who was Fakhruddin Ali Ahmed?
Fakhraduddin Ali Ahmed was the 5th President of the country. From 1974 to 1977, he led the country as President. He was the second Muslim President in Indian history. He was one of the leading lawyers of the country. He remained very active in politics. He had handled important ministries like agriculture and education at the Centre. The tenure of Fakhraduddin Ali Ahmed is one of the controversial chapters of Indian democracy. In 1975, on the recommendation of Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, he had signed the documents declaring emergency in the country. He died during his tenure.
