Chinese tourist steals from passenger on flight from Singapore to Jakarta

Singapore police said on March 10 that they were alerted to a suspected theft aboard a flight on Oct. 2, 2025.

Preliminary investigations showed that the suspect, a Chinese national, left his assigned seat and walked several rows forward, where he allegedly took a bag belonging to another passenger from the overhead compartment, according to The Straits Times.

He then returned to his seat with the bag, searched through it and removed S$750 (US$589) in cash along with three bank cards from the victim’s wallet before placing the bag back in its original compartment, AsiaOne reported.

A cabin crew member noticed the suspicious behavior and alerted the victim to check his belongings.

After realizing that the cash and cards were missing, the passenger informed the crew, who reported the matter to the flight captain.

The incident was then communicated to Indonesian authorities.

The missing items were later recovered on board and returned to the victim before the aircraft landed in Jakarta.

Indonesian authorities denied the man entry and ordered him to return to Singapore, where police officers arrested him upon arrival at Changi Airport.

Police said foreign currencies and several mobile phones were found on the suspect and seized as evidence.
