Why is travel so important in politics, what did the leaders get from it?
Election atmosphere is going on in five states of the country. These states are Assam, West Bengal, Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Puducherry. People in all states have different issues, different demands and interests. Political parties are making their strategies according to this demand of the public. However, the parties also have their own strategy, according to which they are going to seek votes among the public. In this series, mainly political tours are going on in West Bengal and Assam. Through these yatras, BJP and TMC are connecting directly with the public.
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma is taking out ‘Jan Ashirwad Yatra’ in the state from February 28 to March 9. A large number of people are coming for his visit. He himself has said that there is an overwhelming response from people in the entire state. Similarly, in Bengal, BJP on one side and TMC leader Abhishek Banerjee on the other side are carrying out a yatra. BJP’s ‘Parivartan Yatra’ is going on statewide from March 1. This yatra was flagged off by big leaders like Amit Shah, Rajnath Singh, Shivraj Singh Chouhan from different places.

In such a situation, let us know why these travels are so important in politics and what the party and leaders get from it…
Most active travel in West Bengal
As part of BJP’s Parivartan Yatra, rallies, public meetings and Rath Yatra are being carried out at various places in West Bengal. This journey will conclude on 14 March. In its conclusion, BJP will hold a big rally at Brigade Parade Ground in Kolkata, which will be addressed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi himself. This yatra will be used to woo the voters of Bengal and attack against the Mamata Banerjee government.
Trinamool Congress national general secretary and MP Abhishek Banerjee is also taking out a statewide yatra after holding a rally from Baruipur in South 24 Parganas on January 2, 2026. This march has been named ‘No matter how much you attack, Bengal will win again’. Abhishek is also taking part in rallies, roadshows, public meetings, community engagement with tea garden workers and feedback meetings with party workers during his visit.
political tour in assam
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma is taking out the Jan Ashirwad Yatra from February 28 to March 9. He will cover 34-50 assembly constituencies through the yatra. Jan Ashirwad Yatra has passed through many districts of Assam in the last few days. Its purpose is to connect directly with people and seek their support. Besides, the initiatives and developmental agenda of the state government are also being told to the public during the yatra. CM Sarma has described the response of the public during the yatra as the biggest so far in his political career. He says that lakhs of people took part in the yatra and blessed us. In protest against this, ‘Samay Parivartan Yatra’ of Assam Congress was going on.

What do you get from political trips?
In fact, during elections, political yatra, padayatra or rath yatra is mainly done to make direct contact with the public, generate new energy and support to the party and raise issues and garner votes. Through this, the benefit of media and publicity is also obtained because the Yatra and the leaders involved in it remain in the headlines continuously. Also, through this, leaders go beyond the traditional rallies and reach village-to-village, city-to-city, which has proven to be an effective election strategy.
These leaders got success from the journey
It is a miracle of political journey that NT Rama Rao’s Chaitanya Rath Yatra (1982-83) in Andhra Pradesh made him the Chief Minister of the state. He traveled 40,000-75,000 kilometers that entire time. BJP leader Lal Krishna Advani had taken out Ram Rath Yatra in 1990. This journey was from Somnath to Ayodhya. In this, the Ram Mandir issue was raised vigorously, due to which BJP won 120 seats from 85 in the 1991 Lok Sabha, which strengthened the national identity of the party.
Apart from this, Jagan Mohan Reddy took out 3,600 km Praja Sankalp Yatra in Andhra Pradesh in 2017-19. He received support from the entire state, due to which he won the 2019 assembly elections. In this election YSR Congress got 152 seats and Jagan Mohan Reddy became the Chief Minister of Andhra. Congress MP Rahul Gandhi also took out ‘Bharat Jodo Yatra’ in 2022 and ‘Bharat Jodo Nyaya Yatra’ in 2023. This march was in protest against social harmony, unemployment and inflation. The miracle of both these visits was that Congress’s position in the Lok Sabha was strengthened.
This is the reason why Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, the entire BJP party in Bengal and Abhishek Banerjee are taking out a statewide yatra, so that they can get the top post of power in the state.
