For the first time in the country, SC has given permission for euthanasia, what are the rules regarding this? Know everything here
What Is Euthanasia: A couple from Ghaziabad, UP had sought euthanasia from the Supreme Court for their son Harish Rana. Harish is in coma for the last 12 years. After hearing the case, the Supreme Court said that there is no possibility of his recovery. The bench of Justice JB Pardiwala and Justice KV Vishwanathan gave its verdict on this. In such a situation, the question arises that what is euthanasia, when is it demanded and what does the law related to it say in India.
What is euthanasia?
When a person is suffering from unbearable pain or serious illness for a long time and there is little hope of recovery, the process of ending life at the request of his family or sometimes the patient himself is called euthanasia. Its objective is to provide relief to the patient from prolonged pain and suffering.
Euthanasia is generally considered to be of two types
1. Active Euthanasia: In this, such medicine or injection is given to the patient which may cause his death.
2. Passive Euthanasia: In this, the patient’s treatment is stopped or life support, such as a ventilator, is removed. After this, the patient dies after some time.
What does the law say in India?
Euthanasia is not completely legal in India, but passive euthanasia may be permitted under certain circumstances. Many cases on this subject have already reached the Supreme Court. In the case of Nurse Aruna, the Supreme Court had refused to grant euthanasia, but in this judgment it was made clear that it can be allowed in extremely rare circumstances and detailed guidelines were also laid down for it.

According to these guidelines, if a person is in coma for a long time and is alive only on life support, a medical board of doctors prepares a report. On the basis of this, the concerned court can decide whether the patient should be allowed passive euthanasia or not. In this way, the role of the court and medical experts is very important in cases related to euthanasia in India.
