‘From great grandfather to father there were big leaders but’, what did Amit Shah say on Rahul Gandhi?

Union Home Minister Amit Shah targeted the opposition on the no-confidence motion against Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla. He said that as long as BJP-NDA remained in opposition, no-confidence motion was never brought against the Lok Sabha Speaker. We always worked as a constructive opposition and maintained the dignity of the post of President.

Amit Shah said in Lok Sabha that Rahul Gandhi suddenly got an idea. The idea was to have a debate in his press conference. On this the Home Minister said, ‘This is not a market, it is the Lok Sabha. Here the topics of debate are decided. From your great grandfather to your grandmother and father, there were great leaders of India. Lok Sabha has not debated anyone’s press conference. If we expect the House to debate his great press conference, then Om Birla has done a favor to this House by not letting it fall.

‘Rahul Gandhi himself does not want to speak in the Lok Sabha’

Shah further said that false propaganda is being spread that opposition leaders are not allowed to speak. Rahul Gandhi says he is not allowed to speak. In fact he does not want to speak in the Lok Sabha. Rahul Gandhi’s attendance in the 17th Lok Sabha was 51 percent. The average attendance was 66 percent. Whereas in the 16th Lok Sabha, his attendance was 52 percent, while the average attendance was 80 percent.

Shah claimed that we never suppressed the voice of the opposition. The voice of the opposition was suppressed during the Emergency. At that time the leaders were put in jail. To oppose the government, you are questioning the Speaker of the Lok Sabha, who is a symbol of the dignity of democracy.

BJP never brought no-confidence motion against Speaker: Shah

He further said, in the life of our party’s political journey, we have mostly been sitting there (in the opposition). We have been sitting here for a very short time. Mostly (in the ruling party) only Congress party and their allies are sitting. We have also been in opposition. No-confidence motion came against the Lok Sabha Speaker thrice. Bharatiya Janata Party and NDA never brought a no-confidence motion against the Speaker while being in opposition.

‘The post of speaker is above the party’

The Home Minister further said that we acted as a constructive opposition. We worked to protect the dignity of the post of Speaker. We demanded protection of our legal and constitutional rights from the Speaker. We have never brought a no-confidence motion before the Speaker. The post of Speaker is above the party. The Constitution has placed this post on the role of a kind of mediator. You raised questions on the person playing the role of mediator. For 75 years, both our Houses have taken the foundation of democracy deeper than hell. The opposition has today raised a question mark on the credibility of the foundation that has reached deep from the underworld.
