Absence of Iran’s football team in FIFA World Cup 2026, statement of Sports Minister

Absence of Iran team in FIFA World Cup 2026

An important update has come out from the sports world. Iran’s football team has flatly refused to participate in the FIFA World Cup 2026 to be co-hosted by America. Iran’s Sports Minister Ahmed Donyamali has issued a strict statement saying that his team will not be a part of this big event.

Citing security reasons

Iran’s Sports Minister has cited security issues and ongoing serious political disputes with the US as the reason behind this decision. They have alleged that America has assassinated their important leader and thousands of innocent persons have lost their lives due to the war in the last few months, due to which it is not safe for the players to play on American soil.

Conversation between Trump and Infantino

Recently, an important conversation took place between US President Donald Trump and FIFA chief Gianni Infantino on the FIFA World Cup. In this meeting, Trump made it clear that there is no ban on the Iranian team playing and they will be welcomed in America. Infantino also praised the approach, saying there is a need for such events. According to the tournament schedule, Iran was scheduled to play important group matches against Belgium, Egypt and New Zealand in Los Angeles and Seattle.

It is not possible for Iran to play

Experts believe that it has now become almost impossible for Iran to play in this tournament. The situation has become very complex due to the ongoing disputes between America and Israel. Even if FIFA and the US administration provide special visas to the players, the path for government officials associated with the team to go to America is extremely difficult. A clear example of this was seen in December last year, when many Iranian officials could not attend the World Cup draw held in Washington.

facing a historical event

This will be the first time in football history that a team that has qualified in the last 76 years will not participate in the World Cup. If Iran officially exits, the question arises as to who will replace them. This situation has become a challenge for FIFA also. Sports experts say that another strong team from the Asian Football Confederation (AFC), such as Iraq or the United Arab Emirates (UAE), can replace Iran.
