Japan announces release of oil reserves amid Iran war
The war in West Asia has created uncertainty in global energy markets. Meanwhile, Japan has announced the release of a part of its strategic oil reserves. With this decision, Japan has become the first country in the Group of Seven (G7) to take such a step.
Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi said in Tokyo on Wednesday (March 11) that the government can start the process of releasing oil reserves from March 16. Under this scheme, oil equivalent to 15 days of private sector oil reserves and about one month of government reserves will be released in the market.
The Prime Minister said that this step is being taken with the aim of keeping global energy markets stable and reducing a possible supply crisis. Due to increasing conflict related to Iran in West Asia, there is a possibility of disruption in the supply of crude oil, which has increased the concern in the international markets.
Amid volatility in energy markets, emergency measures have also been discussed among major energy consuming countries. After these discussions, Japan has decided to use its strategic oil reserves.
Strategic oil reserves are usually maintained by governments to cope with sudden disruptions in global supply. These reserves help maintain oil supplies during wars, geopolitical crises or natural disasters.
Experts believe the release of oil reserves by Japan will bring additional supply to the international market and could help control extreme price fluctuations.
Japan is largely dependent on imported crude oil for its energy needs. Most of the country’s oil imports come from West Asia, so any tensions in that region could directly affect Japan’s energy security.
According to government officials, the move is part of a broader contingency plan aimed at ensuring stable supply of fuel in the country and maintaining energy security for domestic consumers and industries.
