Suryakumar credits Rohit for India’s fearless T20 approach

India captain Suryakumar Yadav credited former skipper Rohit Sharma for laying the foundation of the fearless brand of cricket that powered India to their ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 triumph.

India defeated New Zealand by 96 runs in the final at the Narendra Modi Stadiumsecuring their third T20 World Cup title and successfully defending the trophy.

Rohit’s influence on India’s T20 philosophy

Speaking before the tournament, Suryakumar clarified that the aggressive style currently associated with the team was not his innovation but something that began under Rohit Sharma’s leadership.

“It’s true that we are playing that form of cricket, but it’s not me who started it. We started playing this brand of cricket under Rohit,” Suryakumar said.

The captain acknowledged Rohit’s impact on transforming India’s approach in T20 cricket, especially after setbacks in earlier tournaments.

Turning point after 2022 World Cup

The major shift in India’s strategy came after their 10-wicket defeat to England in the 2022 T20 World Cup semi-final in Adelaide.

In that match, India posted 168 runsbut England chased the target comfortably in just 16 oversexposing weaknesses in India’s conservative approach.

Following the defeat, Rohit and then coach Rahul Dravid decided that the team needed a more aggressive style of play.

A fearless powerplay strategy

Rohit led the transformation by encouraging the team to attack from the very beginning of the innings.

Earlier, scoring 50 runs in the powerplay was considered satisfactory. Under Rohit’s strategy, India began targeting 70–75 runs in the first six overseven if it meant losing early wickets.

The philosophy was simple: take the attack to the opposition rather than playing cautiously.

Flexible team balance

To support this aggressive style, India altered their team composition.

Instead of relying on four specialist bowlers, the team preferred three frontline bowlers supported by multiple all-rounders such as Hardik Pandya, Axar Patel, Shivam Dube and Ravindra Jadeja.

This approach provided depth in batting, allowing players to play with freedom knowing the lineup extended to No. 8.

Surya takes philosophy forward

After Rohit, Virat Kohliand Ravindra Jadeja stepped away from T20 cricket following the 2024 World CupSuryakumar Yadav inherited the leadership role and continued the same aggressive philosophy.

With Gautam Gambhir as head coach, the team doubled down on the fearless approach, backing players like Abhishek Sharma and Sanju Samson to play attacking cricket regardless of previous failures.

The strategy paid off as India posted massive totals during the tournament, including 256 and 253 in crucial matchesshowcasing the team’s attacking mindset.

Trust in players and belief in strategy

Even when results briefly faltered, Suryakumar remained confident in the system he had learned from Rohit.

“In sports, wins and losses keep happening. What I learned from Rohit is to stay balanced regardless of the result,” he said.

That clarity and belief eventually helped India dominate the tournament and emerge as the undisputed champions of the T20 format once again.
