Severe heat hits Delhi before time, mercury crosses 35°C in first week of March itself
New Delhi: This time in Delhi-NCR, the heat has started showing its effects even before the scheduled time. The month of March is usually known for mild cold and spring weather, but this time the extreme heat is troubling people since the beginning of the month. The situation is such that in the very first week of March the temperature has crossed 35 degrees Celsius, which is usually seen in the last days of the month. Due to the continuously increasing temperature, the effect of strong sunlight and hot wind is being clearly felt during the day.
If we look at the weather data, the maximum temperature of Delhi has remained continuously above 35 degrees Celsius for the last four days. Generally, the weather remains pleasant in the first fifteen days of March and the heat increases gradually. But this time the heat has started showing its effect in the first ten days itself. It is becoming difficult to go out during the day due to strong sunlight. The effect of heat is clearly visible on the roads in the afternoon and people are already facing the heat.
Temperature recorded much higher than normal
The maximum temperature recorded at Delhi’s main meteorological observatory Safdarjung on Tuesday was 35.5 degrees Celsius. This is about 7.1 degrees more than the normal temperature, which is considered quite high for this time. The minimum temperature recorded was 18.8 degrees Celsius, which was about 4.8 degrees more than normal. Light fog was also seen in some areas in the morning. The Meteorological Department estimates that the temperature may remain between 35 to 37 degrees Celsius on Wednesday also.
Temperature of last three days (in degrees Celsius)
March 8 – Maximum 35.6, minimum 16.7
March 9 – Maximum 35.3, minimum 19.0
March 10 – Maximum 35.5, minimum 18.8
It is clear from these figures that the heat persists in the capital.
There is little chance of relief now
Weather experts say that at present the people of Delhi-NCR are not expected to get relief from the heat anytime soon. According to meteorologists, this time many natural factors are less active which usually keep the weather cool. It is being told that this time snowfall has reduced in the hilly areas, due to which the effect of cold winds is also being felt there. Apart from this, there has been very less rainfall in recent times. Due to less moisture in the air and dry winds, the effect of heat has increased further.
Pollution level started increasing
Along with the heat, the air of the capital is also getting worse. On Tuesday, the air quality index (AQI) level in many areas of Delhi reached above 300, which is considered in the very poor category. The situation was more worrying in some areas-
Vivek Vihar – 341
Rohini – 341
Chandni Chowk – 322
Experts say that this time the weather conditions are such that pollutant particles are easily remaining in the air. Usually strong winds and changes in weather carry these particles away, but at present such factors are less active.
