Berlin. The match played between Arsenal and Bayer Leverkusen in the first match of the Round of 16 of the Champions League ended in a 1-1 draw. In this match played on Thursday at the BayerArena Stadium, Arsenal got a penalty in the last minutes, on which Kai Havertz scored a goal to save the team from defeat.
No goals were scored in the first half
From the beginning of the match, both the teams played cautiously and focused on strong defence. Leverkusen captain Robert Andrich made headlines in the opening minutes when he fouled Arsenal player Victor Gyöckeres outside the box, earning him a yellow card.
Arsenal controlled more of the ball, but few clear-cut chances were created due to Leverkusen’s strong defence. In the middle of the first half, Gabriel Martinelli made a brilliant curling shot, but the ball hit the crossbar and went out.
On the other hand, Ibrahim Maza made some attacks on behalf of Leverkusen, but till the end of the first half neither team was able to score a goal.
Leverkusen lead in the second half
Leverkusen took the lead as the second half began. Martin Terrier’s header was brilliantly stopped by goalkeeper David Raya, but after a corner, Alejandro Grimaldo’s ball reached the far post, where Robert Andrich scored with a header.
After this goal, Leverkusen’s team defended strongly and did not give many chances to Arsenal.
Havertz equalized in the last minute
Arsenal got a big chance in the last moments of the match. Noni Madueke was blocked by Malik Tillman in the penalty area, after which the referee awarded a penalty through video review.
Kai Havertz, who came on the field for Arsenal, converted the penalty into a goal in the 89th minute and made the score 1-1. The match ended with this tie and now the second leg will be played in London next week.

In other matches of the Round of 16, Real Madrid defeated Manchester City 3-0. Paris Saint-Germain led Chelsea 5-2, while Bodo Glimt recorded its fifth consecutive win by beating Sporting Club 3-0.
