Cricket World Cup 2027 Qualifier disrupted in Nepal due to Israel-Iran war
Six matches of the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup League 2 to be held in Nepal have been postponed due to the Israel-Iran war. The 2027 World Cup qualifiers were to be held in Kirtipur from March 10 to 20, but have now been postponed indefinitely.
“In view of the current situation in the Middle East, the CWC League 2 matches scheduled to begin on March 10 in Kathmandu have been postponed until further notice. The matches affected include matches in Oman, UAE and Nepal. The rescheduled dates will be announced in the coming days after further discussions,” Cricket Nepal said in a statement.
What is ICC CWC League 2?
This tournament is a multi-year tournament like the Test Championship, which determines the qualification for the ODI World Cup 2027 to be held in South Africa, Namibia and Zimbabwe. Teams play a number of tri-series with different host nations to form the overall points table. Four teams from CWC League 2 will qualify for the 2027 World Cup.
Currently the postponement has been announced for the tri-series of Oman, Nepal and UAE. These three countries were included in the ICC T20 World Cup 2026 in India and Sri Lanka. However, Oman and the UAE are now caught up in the ongoing Middle East crisis.
Zimbabweans finally return home after war halted travel
This is the latest incident of how the US-Iran-Israel war has affected sports. Earlier, Zimbabwe Cricket had confirmed that their team faced several problems while returning home after playing the T20 World Cup 2026 in India.
Zimbabwe had reached the Super 8s and played their last game on Sunday, but their return was delayed by at least a few days due to travel uncertainty.
