The prevalence of diabetes in India is increasing rapidly and the country is often referred to as the “Diabetes Capital of the World”. Currently, more than 101 million people are believed to be suffering from diabetes in the country. The most serious complications of type 2 diabetes include heart disease and kidney disease. Therefore, early detection and proper treatment of these diseases becomes very important. It is against this background that the ICRAS tool has been developed.

A panel of renowned expert doctors was guided to develop this tool. The panel included Sanjay Kalra, V. Mohan, Atul Dhingra, Deep Dutta, Dinesh Khullar, Jothydev Kesavadev, KD Modi, Manas P. Barua, Nitin Kapoor, Pramila Kalra, Shaila Sheikh and Tiny Nair. The tool developed under his guidance will help doctors more accurately identify the potential risk of heart and kidney diseases in diabetic patients.

Karthik Pithambaran, Medical Director, Abbott India, said that Abbott is constantly striving to improve diabetes healthcare. The company strives to collaborate with healthcare professionals to make patient screening more effective and improve treatment outcomes. The ICRAS tool helps doctors to identify the risk of Diabetic Kidney Disease (DKD), Coronary Heart Disease (CHD) as well as Major Adverse Cardiovascular Events (MACE) early. So this tool will be useful to start the treatment at the right time and keep the condition of the patients under control.

Various health indicators have been included in the ICRAS tool. It takes into account medical examination reports, blood sugar levels, weight, lifestyle habits and other health-related factors. Based on this information the tool creates separate risk scores for kidney disorders, heart disease and serious cardiac events in patients with type 2 diabetes. It also takes into account the differences in risk between men and women, thus providing a more individualized and accurate assessment for each patient.

This tool is also designed in a secure manner with privacy in mind. This web-based tool does not store any personal information of patients or doctors. So the entire assessment process remains secure and confidential. Shaila Sheikh, an endocrinologist at Saifi Hospital in Mumbai, said complications of diabetes often result from a combination of high blood sugar levels, weight gain, other health problems and daily lifestyle habits. Over time these factors can put extra strain on the heart and kidneys. About one-third of patients with type 2 diabetes develop heart disease, while about 40 percent are at risk of developing chronic kidney disease.

She added that the biggest problem with these complications is that they often develop slowly with no symptoms in the early stages. So patients feel healthy for a long time. That is why early detection of disease risk is very important. Tools like ICRAS can help doctors anticipate these problems and initiate treatment at the right time. As the use of digital technology in the healthcare sector is increasing, tools like the ICRAS tool are becoming an important aid to doctors. Such technology is expected to be of great benefit in reducing diabetes-related complications and improving patient health.
