Colleen Hoover discusses the prospects of an It Starts with Us based movie
In an interview with VarietyHoover said she did not write the sequel novel with a movie adaptation in mind. She stated, “I wrote that book as a ‘thank you’ to readers. I don’t know that there’s enough story to make a film adaptation either.”
The 2024 film It Ends With Us tells the story of Lily Bloom, played by Blake Lively, who begins a relationship with neurosurgeon Ryle Kincaid while confronting cycles of abuse connected to her childhood. Justin Baldoni directed the film and also portrayed Ryle, while Brandon Sklenar played Atlas Corrigan, Lily’s childhood friend and later romantic partner in story.
Hoover also addressed the sequel directly when asked if the story should continue on screen. She said, “It Ends With Us was so impactful, and it was so well wrapped up in the first film.” Hoover added that the follow up novel focused on the characters’ happiness and their future after the events of the first story arc.
It Starts With Us shifts the narrative toward Lily’s relationship with Atlas as they attempt to build a future together while she co parents her daughter with Ryle. The story explores rebuilding life after trauma and depicts Lily balancing motherhood, co parenting responsibilities, and reconnecting with Atlas as both characters attempt stability and healing in their shared future.
Hoover said she never planned a sequel adaptation but did not completely dismiss the possibility. She explained, “Of course, if they all came together and wanted to do it, I’m not going to talk anyone out of it.” Hoover said she originally wrote the sequel simply wanting to see Atlas and Lily happy in their lives beyond conflict.
