Abrar Ahmed’s signing sparks controversy, Sunrisers Leeds X account suspended
Sunrisers Leeds’ X account was suspended on March 12 after they signed Pakistan spinner Abrar Ahmed during The Hundred auction. The franchise, which is owned by the Sun Group, an Indian business group headed by Kalanithi Maran, secured the services of Abrar for INR 2.34 crore.
Kavya Maran, who is the CEO of the franchise, was present during the auction and was assisted by head coach Daniel Vettori in London. Harry Brook will lead the team.
It is the first time that a team, which is also involved in the Indian Premier League (IPL), has signed a Pakistan player. Indian fans were miffed with the decision and urged everyone to boycott Sunrisers Hyderabad in the Indian Premier League 2026.
Now the X account of the Sunrisers Leeds has been suspended. X suspends the account that violates its policies. There is no explanation given as to why the action has been taken against The Hundred franchise.
Abrar’s post in 2025 had angered the Indian fans as it appeared to mock the Indian Armed Forces, and hashtags #ShameOnSRH and #BoycottSunrisers were trending on X. Many critics felt that by offering a contract to a player accused of making remarks against India, the Indian owners had gone against the public sentiments.
There were speculations that four Indian owned teams, MI London, Southern Brave. Manchester Super Giants and Sunrisers Leeds would ignore Pakistan players. However, the franchises were warned by the ECB ahead of the auction. Indian owners have not signed Pakistan players in the South Africa’s SA20 and the UAE’s ILT20.
