BCCI breaks silence on Pakistani spinner Abrar Ahmed’s ‘The Hundred’ deal

Delhi: Just before the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026, the Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) franchise seems to be embroiled in a new controversy. Sunrisers Group team Sunrisers Leeds has included Pakistan’s leg spinner Abrar Ahmed for The Hundred League to be held in England. After this decision, team owner Kavya Maran is facing sharp criticism on social media.

Protest increased on social media

As soon as the news of Abrar Ahmed’s inclusion in the team came out, there was anger among Indian cricket fans. Many users raised questions on this decision and demanded the franchise management to reconsider it. Amidst this controversy, the X (formerly Twitter) account of Sunrisers Leeds was also suspended, due to which the matter came into more discussion.

BCCI said – out of our jurisdiction

Vice President of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) Rajeev Shukla has given his reaction on this entire issue. He clarified that this matter is not related to IPL and the board has no role in the matters of foreign leagues.

Talking to news agency ANI, he said that this is completely a matter related to foreign tournaments. In such a situation, BCCI has no right to interfere in this. He said that the final decision in this matter will have to be taken by the concerned franchisee only.

Pakistani players did not play in IPL after 2009

Due to long strained relations between India and Pakistan, participation of Pakistani players in IPL has almost ended. Since 2009, no IPL franchise has included players from Pakistan in its team.

Coach gave the reason for purchase

After the auction, the team’s head coach Daniel Vettori told that the team’s first choice was the experienced England spinner Adil Rashid. However, the efforts to acquire him were not successful, after which the team decided to include Abrar Ahmed as an alternative.

However, it is clear from the reactions being received regarding this decision in India that this step is proving to be quite controversial and there is a continuous debate on it on social media.
