Hanoi ranked 25th and Ho Chi Minh City at 38th in a list of world’s bets cities this year as voted by British magazine Time Out.

To identify the places that residents say are the most exciting places to visit right now, the magazine surveyed more than 24,000 residents across 150 cities, asking residents questions in 42 languages.

Participants were asked about dozens of factors shaping urban life, including food, nightlife, culture, affordability, happiness, community and overall city vibe.

The results were combined with insights from Time Out’s global network of more than 100 city experts, creating a ranking designed to capture the places that locals say offer the best urban experiences today.

Hanoi has been described as “an intoxicating blend of the old and the new,” according to Time Out.

The Vietnamese capital also scored highly for affordability, with 62% of residents saying it is inexpensive to eat out and 80% saying the same about grabbing a coffee.

The city’s culinary scene received strong praise, with 73% of locals recommending it, while 67% rated the nightlife highly and 72% said it is easy to make friends in the city.

Ho Chi Minh City scored exceptionally well for food with 75% of locals rating it highly and nightlife with a 70% approval score. It is also a feel-good city, with locals reporting a 75% overall happiness score and the same percentage saying it is easy to make friends.

Melbourne in Australia has been named the best city in the world, followed by China’s Shanghai.
