The relationship between Bollywood and cricket has always been special. Many film stars have shown their deep love for this game. But there was one actor of the 1980s and 1990s, whose passion for cricket was so much that he could not bear the shock of India’s World Cup defeat. This actor was Shafi Inamdar, who was very fond of cricket.
Shafi Inamdar was a great fan of cricket
Shafi Inamdar was such a big fan of cricket that even during the shooting he would not miss the opportunity to know the score of the match. People present on the set say that he would often ask in between takes – “What was the score?” And as soon as there was a break, they would go to watch the match on a nearby TV.
Accident happened during World Cup match
On 13 March 1996, a tragic incident occurred during the India vs Sri Lanka semi-final match of the Cricket World Cup. When India got into trouble while chasing the target and started facing defeat, it is said that Shafi Inamdar could not bear the shock. During that time he suffered a serious heart attack and died the same evening. One of his close theater colleagues later said, “Cricket was his heartbeat. Sadly, the game he loved so much became the cause of his last breath.”
Journey from Ratnagiri to Mumbai
Shafi Inamdar was born in Dapoli, Ratnagiri district of Maharashtra. Later he came to Mumbai for studies. He felt connected to theater during his college days and it was from here that his acting career started. He made his mark working in Gujarati and Marathi theatre. After this he also associated with the prestigious theater groups National Theater of India and Indian People’s Theater Association (IPTA).

Created a distinct identity in films and TV
Shafi Inamdar started his film career in 1982 with the film Vijeta. After this, he acted strongly in films like Ardh Satya, Anokha Rishta, Nazrana, Sada Suhagan and Amrit. However, he got his real popularity from Doordarshan’s famous sitcom Yeh Jo Hai Zindagi. His character in this show made him a household name.

After this, Shafi Inamdar appeared in many TV shows, including shows like Aadha Sach Aadha Jhooth, Ghalib and Badshah Jahangir. Although his life ended suddenly, he left a memorable mark in the world of Indian cinema and TV with his acting and personality.
