Recently, the activity of installing extremely bright headlights in vehicles is increasing rapidly. Especially many drivers are using LED and HID kits easily available in the market. According to traffic experts and eye doctors, such headlights pose a serious risk to other drivers during night driving and can increase the chances of an accident.
LED means Light Emitting Diode and HID means High-Intensity Discharge, both these types of lights give much brighter light than normal halogen bulbs. When such lights fall directly into the eye, a very bright light suddenly falls on the retina inside the eye, due to which the vision may become blurred for some time. Experts identify this condition as glare effect.
According to eye doctors, a situation like temporary blindness occurs for a few seconds for the driver facing extremely bright headlights. During this time the road, vehicles, pedestrians or other obstacles are not clearly visible. In such a situation, it may become difficult to control the vehicle and the risk of an accident may increase. Frequent exposure to such bright light can cause problems like eye fatigue, watering, glare, and headache. These problems can become more serious especially during long night journeys.
Traffic safety experts say that many drivers install LED or HID kits purchased from the market instead of the headlights provided by the company. These kits are often not made for the vehicle’s original headlight design. Due to this, the direction of the light is not proper and the light falls directly into the eyes of the oncoming driver, due to which heavy glare is experienced.
