Brilliant Features You Should Know
Google has announced a major update to Google Maps, which includes new features such as “Ask Maps” and “Immersive Navigation” to assist with navigation and trip planning in more intelligent and visual ways. The improvements to the Maps platform are powered by Google’s Gemini AI technology and are considered to be one of the most significant changes made in the last several years.
This new version of Google Maps extends beyond a traditional navigation app and allows Google Maps to function as an AI-based assistant for users, helping them create routes, find new places, and gain a greater understanding of their travel before they leave home.
What is Ask Maps?
One of the biggest new features included in this update is Ask Maps, which is a new conversational AI capability built into Google Maps. Thanks to the capabilities of Gemini, users can ask questions about places, routes, and activities in a more natural language style than having to perform a search in the traditional sense.
For example, users can ask “Where is a quiet café located near me?” or “Can you plan a road trip with scenic stops along the way?” Google Maps then uses its knowledge of Google Maps, including reviews, photos, and locations, to give the user recommended places to check out.
Ask Maps is made for users to get directions and find out where they should go and what they can do. To provide context for the user’s needs, the app will consider the user’s past activity in Maps.
According to The Times of India, the app will roll out in the United States and India, but some features will roll out globally later.
Immersive Navigation – a New Way to Look at Your Route
Along with the AI Assistant, Google announced Immersive Navigation as a new way for people to navigate their route visually. As opposed to a traditional map, the user will see very clear 3D images of the route, which will include a 3D image of the terrain, buildings, roads, and intersections.
According to Road & Track, Immersive Navigation enhances the driver’s ability to understand their surroundings by showing important items like lane changes, crosswalks, traffic signals and overpasses, and it enhances the driver’s ability to understand their surroundings.

Coordinates and camera angles, along with smart zooming features, assist the driver in their ability to understand how to navigate through complex intersections and merges on highways.
According to Road & Track, by combining 3D rendered images and real-time navigation instructions, Immersive Navigation will decrease confusion when navigating, and it will also give drivers more time to anticipate the next turn or road conditions.
A Smarter Navigation Experience
According to Google, these changes show their ongoing commitment to running AI throughout our daily use of the products that we use every day. With Gemini behind the ability to ask Maps, as well as better visual cues to enhance clarity while navigating, the Google Maps platform now provides users with a more dynamic and smarter travel experience.
When users need to find a location and/or plan stops along the way, they no longer will need to manually search for those items; instead, AI will be able to take advantage of user data and provide immediate insights. The improved navigation visuals will also give users an improved perspective of their intended route and environment.
Industry experts say that these updates are the most significant change in Google Maps over the past decade because they bring together conversational AI and immersive visualizations in one map/navigation platform.

AI-Enhanced Navigation and What the Future Holds
The introduction of both Ask Maps and Immersive Navigation demonstrates that the way people use their smartphones as navigation tools is changing significantly. Increasingly, AI assistants will be integrated into existing navigation platforms in a way that makes trip planning, finding new places, and navigating through unfamiliar areas much easier for users.
If Google continues to roll out these features around the globe, Google Maps could transition away from being a simple navigation app to a fully integrated AI travel and discovery tool that allows users to explore their surroundings before they step outside.
