Do you feel sleepy and tired all the time? There may be deficiency of this vitamin in the body

New Delhi: In today’s fast-paced and hectic world, feeling tired has become a common thing. Most people ignore it, and attribute it to their busy lifestyle, work-related stress or lack of sleep. However, often it can also be a symptom of deficiency of certain nutrients in our body.

According to a British doctor, if you are feeling constantly tired without any apparent reason, then the reason behind this could be the deficiency of Thiamine i.e. Vitamin B1. He told that the initial symptoms of this deficiency are often ignored considering it to be normal, whereas it is important to pay attention to it in time.

What do doctors say?

British General Practitioner Dr. Sarmed Major said through a post on Instagram on March 14 that the reason for fatigue in many people without any apparent reason may be the deficiency of thiamine (vitamin B1).

He also explained why this deficiency is often ignored and what effects it can have on the body.

Why is thiamine deficiency ignored?

According to Dr. Meijer, thiamine deficiency is almost never tested for in routine medical tests, even though several studies have found deficiency in different patient groups.

He told, " In the early stages of thiamine deficiency, symptoms such as fatigue, irritability, poor memory or sleep disturbances appear, which are often ignored by both patients and doctors as normal stress or symptoms of old age."

The reserves of thiamine in the body last only for 20 to 30 days. Therefore, poor eating habits, excessive sugar intake or increased physical stress can very quickly reduce the levels of this nutrient.

Modern lifestyle can also increase the risk

Dr. Major told that many habits related to today’s lifestyle can also cause thiamine deficiency.

Excessive consumption of refined carbohydrates and alcohol increases the body’s need for thiamine, as it plays an important role in the processing of glucose.

he adds, " Many common medications, such as some diuretic medications for blood pressure, can increase the rate at which thiamine is removed from the body by the kidneys."

Symptoms of Thiamine Deficiency

The initial symptoms of thiamine deficiency are not obvious, but some common signs may appear, such as:

  • feeling constantly tired
  • mental ambiguity
  • mood swings or irritability
  • mild memory loss

In severe cases this deficiency can cause a disease called beriberi, which affects the nerves and heart. This can also cause muscle wasting, numbness and heart-related problems.

How to get relief from thiamine deficiency?

According to Dr. Meijer, it is relatively easy to overcome thiamine deficiency. For this, taking thiamine supplement or changing the diet can be helpful.

For people who have poor nutrition, are elderly, or are alcohol dependent, he recommends taking fat-soluble thiamine supplements.

He said, " Once levels are restored, the body’s ability to convert food into cellular energy improves almost immediately, often eliminating years of ‘unexplained’ fatigue within a few weeks."
