iOS 26.4 Beta Brings Exciting iPhone Upgrades
Apple has launched the iOS 26.4 Beta, bringing new features, enhancements, app upgrades, and design improvements to the iPhone. The latest version of iOS focuses on enhancing commonly used apps like Apple Music, Podcasts, and Reminders, while also introducing new emojis and enhancing existing accessibility features. Apple is also currently testing the Developer Beta version of iOS 26.4 with Developers before releasing it to the general public.
In addition to many enhancements to existing apps, the majority of new features in iOS 26.4 leverage AI to improve the user experience of these applications. Apple will debut new Emoji designs with the iOS 26.4 beta release, and will also introduce emblematic representations of some of the stories, people and ideas that have impacted your life.
New Emojis Released With Update To iOS 26.4 Beta
A major part of iOS 26.4 is the addition of new emoji options. New emoji options include distorted face with strangled open mouth, whale, trombone, treasure chest of gold, mudslide, fighting cloud, and hairy creature, and many of the existing emojis will receive an update.
Apple is adding more than 160 different emoji designs including completely new emojis and existing emojis with new skin tone options. After the final Unicode standard is released all of the new emojis will be made available via several different platforms.
Apple Music Adds AI Playlist Creation Feature
One major addition in iOS 26.4 is a new feature in Apple Music called Playlist Playground, which will use Apple’s AI to create playlists without needing any music files from users.
For example, you could tell Apple Music to create a list of “sad music of the 1990’s” or “relaxing music for studying.” You can also continue to hone the playlist you just created with more specific requests. This feature is part of a much larger rollout of AI tools in iOS, including other new features.
Apple Podcasts Adds Video Functionality
Podcasting is being made more user-friendly in iOS 26.4 as Apple Podcasts has added an entirely new set of video podcast capabilities. Users can now listen to audio versions and watch video versions of podcasts right from the same interface with the new update.
This feature will also allow for video quality to be automatically adjusted as needed based on network conditions for improved performance. This update is indicative of the rising popularity of video podcasting and represents Apple’s goal of creating an improved multimedia experience across all of its products.
Reminders App Gets Smarter Task Management
Apple has revamped its Reminders app to offer improved functionality for managing tasks. The introduction of a Smart List allows users to more easily sort tasks into groups that they have marked ‘urgent’ so that they can better prioritize their most pressing responsibilities.
An earlier iteration of the Reminders app had an “Urgent” task marker; when this label was engaged, alarms and reminders were issued. This new version simplifies the process by automatically clustering those urgent tasks together thus enabling users faster access.

Improved Security and Privacy Features
With the introduction of this new feature comes an increased focus on providing users with enhanced security. Stolen Device Protection now enables most sensitive actions to be completed only when associated with biometric verification under the condition that the device is not being used at one of its required, trusted locations (ex., home or work). When enabled, Stolen Device Protection requires biometrics (ex., Face ID) for some actions and may add additional verification times during high-risk transactions.
Health and Sleep Tracking Improvements
The Apple Health app will undergo further improvement to also include enhancements to measure health and sleep patterns with iOS 26.4. In the iOS 26.4 update, new sleep tracking insights have been added to the Health app, including a metric for average bedtime to track long-term trend patterns.
In addition, after having removed blood oxygen readings, those values are now visible again on the Vitals graph within the Health app after legal disputes over patent infringement had caused Apple to remove support for this feature. These enhancements are intended to give users a more complete picture of their health from their iPhone through more comprehensive analysis.
Interface and System Improvements
Apple continues to enhance the user experience with many UI enhancements throughout the operating system. Similar to prior IOS versions, the search box in the App Store and Games applications have also been moved back to the top of the applications for improved access. Also, the Wallpaper Gallery and Apple Watch Face Gallery have been redesigned with clearer categories for improved navigation and customization. 9to5Mac Although these updates consist of individual small refinements, when added together they create a more pleasant overall user experience.
When iOS 26.4 Will Be Released
As of November 9th Apple has released the development beta for iOS 26.4 and will continue releasing additional beta versions until the final public version is released. Apple typically releases multiple test versions during the beta process before releasing a final public build of its operating system. Based on the normal release schedule of Apple OS updates, the final version of the iOS 26.4 update is expected to be available during the later part of 2025 after completion of the beta program.

Numerous Enhancements in iOS 26.4 Prior to WWDC
Even though the update for iOS 26.4 does not give us a full overhaul, there are many enhancements to note across a number of categories, including AI tools, apps for entertainment purposes, security resources, and customization capabilities.
This particular update to iOS was also launched just prior to Apple’s annual WWDC Developer Conference, where we are likely to hear about what the next major release of iOS will bring.
