Employee Layoffs at Meta: Company may snatch jobs from 15,000 employees, know what is the reason?

Employee Layoffs at Meta: Meta, the parent company of Facebook and Instagram, is once again preparing for mass layoffs. According to a Reuters report, the company may fire 20% of its global workforce. As of December 31, 2025, Meta had approximately 79,000 employees. Based on this figure, more than 15,000 people may lose their jobs.

The company is taking this step to manage the increasing expenditure of billions of dollars on Artificial Intelligence (AI) and the increasing costs related to data centers. However, Meta spokesperson Andy Stone immediately denied any layoffs, dismissing the reports as “mere speculation.”

Layoffs planned to offset AI investments:

According to reports, Meta has invested heavily in recruiting new talent for its ‘Superintelligence Labs’ (MSL). The company recently bought Alexander Wang’s startup, ‘Scale AI’ for $14.5 billion (about Rs 1.21 lakh crore).

Additionally, Meta aims to spend $600 billion (about Rs 50 lakh crore) on AI infrastructure by 2028. To compensate for these huge expenses, the company is considering reducing its workforce.

Zuckerberg says- big teams are no longer needed for big work

Mark Zuckerberg had already indicated that AI has made productivity easier. In January this year, he had said that projects which earlier required large teams to complete, can now be completed by just one capable person with the help of AI.

Meta’s biggest layoff ever

If the company lays off 20% of its employees, it would be the largest workforce reduction in Meta’s history. Earlier in November 2022, the company had laid off 11,000 employees. Just four months later, in March 2023, 10,000 more employees were laid off. Meta currently has 79,000 employees.

2022 86,000
2023 75,000
