Lift accident at Kanpur Central Station: 18 passengers trapped, chaos for 17 minutes

Up news: A major accident was averted on Saturday at Kanpur Central Station, one of the busiest railway stations of Uttar Pradesh. The lift connecting platform numbers 2 and 3 was overloaded with passengers, leaving 18 people trapped inside. The incident created chaos at the station and spread fear among the passengers.

Crowd due to UP Police Recruitment Exam

There was a huge crowd at the station as many people were catching the train for the UP Police recruitment exam. In a hurry, many passengers started using the lift to reach the footover bridge. The lift had a capacity of only 15 people, but it carried 18 passengers. As soon as the lift went up, it stopped midway and the people trapped inside got scared.

Passengers stranded for 17 minutes

The passengers trapped in the lift kept trying to open the door, but it did not open. Hearing the screams of the people, the passengers present on the platform immediately helped. Eventually the passengers themselves broke the door of the lift and took everyone out safely. During this time people remained trapped inside for about 17 minutes. RPF personnel also reached the spot and helped in rescue. No one was seriously injured.

Station superintendent told what happened

Station Superintendent Avadhesh Dwivedi said that overloading was the main reason. There was a technical glitch with 18 people in the lift and the lift stopped. Railway property was also damaged due to breaking of doors by stranded passengers, for which legal action will be taken. He also said that during the incident, the railway technical team did not reach the spot immediately, on which the passengers expressed their displeasure.
