You can face jail for carrying this small fruit on a flight! You will also be stunned to know the reason!
Flight Travel Rules: During air travel, we often want to carry our favorite things or puja items with us. There is often a trend in Indian families to keep dry coconut (copra) with them for auspicious purposes. But if you are traveling by plane then this small coconut can cause big trouble for you. The International Air Transport Association (IATA) has placed dried coconut in the category of Dangerous Goods.
Why is it considered a flying bomb
The reason behind why there is so much strictness at the airport regarding dry coconut is its flammable nature. Dried coconut contains very high amount of oil. The air pressure and temperature in the cargo hold of the aircraft (where the bags are kept) are constantly changing. According to science, dried coconut has the tendency of spontaneous combustion. This means that it can ignite spontaneously without any external spark just by coming in contact with heat and oxygen.
The biggest threat to security
According to aviation experts, if a large quantity of dry coconut is kept together, it can catch fire through self-heating. It is almost impossible to extinguish such a fire in the cargo area of the aircraft which can prove fatal for the aircraft flying in the air. That is why it is strictly prohibited to carry it not only in cabin baggage but also in check-in baggage.

There is also a ban on water coconuts
Not only dry but also raw or watery coconut is prohibited in flight. There are two main reasons for this. First, there is a certain limit on the amount of liquids an aircraft can carry. Secondly, X-ray scanners cannot detect the liquid present inside the thick layer of coconut. From security point of view, there is suspicion of explosive liquid inside it, hence security agencies do not allow it to board.
Action may be taken if rules are broken
If you are found with dry coconut during checking, not only will it be confiscated but a heavy fine can also be imposed on the passenger for violating security rules. In some serious circumstances, the passenger may be prevented from traveling or may face legal action. Therefore, next time before leaving for an air journey, definitely remove the coconut from your bag.
