‘LPG supply a matter of concern’, government admits; But denied the news of shortage
Amidst the increasing tension in West Asia and reports of ship movement being affected around the Strait of Hormuz, people’s concern about the availability of LPG in India has started increasing. However, the Central Government has clarified that at present there is no shortage of LPG anywhere in the country and no information has been received about running out of LPG from any distribution centre.
What do the officials say?
According to the government, in the last few days there has been a sudden increase in demand due to people booking more gas cylinders in panic. This is being called panic booking. Officials say that despite this additional demand, the supply and distribution system of LPG in the country is continuing normally and consumers are not facing any shortage of gas.
The Central Government said that the current situation is being continuously monitored. The government is cautious in view of the ongoing conflict in West Asia and the situation around the Strait of Hormuz, but till now LPG shortage has not been confirmed from any state or city. Therefore, an appeal has been made to the people not to make unnecessary bookings.
India is the second largest importer of LPG in the world. About 90 percent of the LPG used in the country is supplied through the Strait of Hormuz. This sea route is located between Iran and Oman and is considered extremely important for global energy supply. Due to recent tensions, the movement of ships passing through this route has been affected, due to which the global supply chain is expected to be affected.
What did the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas say?
Meanwhile, the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas said on Friday that regular supply of LPG to domestic consumers is being ensured. According to the ministry, the supply of gas is continuing continuously for hospitals, educational institutions and other essential services, so that there is no hindrance in the essential works.
The government says that keeping in mind the current circumstances, the supply and distribution system is being continuously monitored. If necessary, additional steps will also be taken so that the availability of gas in the country is not affected.
Earlier in Parliament, Union Petroleum and Natural Gas Minister Hardeep Singh Puri had said that despite the challenges arising at the global level, India’s energy supply is completely secure. He assured that the government is ready to deal with every situation and the supply of LPG in the country remains normal at present, hence there is no need for people to panic.
