Calcutta High Court orders formation of SIT in Hariharpara minor girl rape-murder case

A new twist in the investigation after the rape and murder of a minor girl in Murshidabad’s Hariharpara created sensation. The Calcutta High Court ordered the formation of a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to ensure an impartial investigation into the incident. A five-member Special Investigation Team headed by an IPS officer has been formed on the orders of Justice Joy Sengupta. The team has been asked to report the progress of the investigation to the court within a specified period.

The body recovered the day after the disappearance, alleging brutality

According to family sources, the 14-year-old girl from Hariharpara suddenly disappeared. A complaint was lodged with the police on behalf of the family. The next day his body was found near the house. The family alleged that the minor was murdered after being raped. The family members also claimed that there were multiple injury marks on the body.

Question about the first autopsy

The family alleged that the first post-mortem report did not adequately highlight the brutality of the incident. Not only that, the police were accused of not including the provisions of the POCSO Act in the investigation and there were various errors in the charge sheet. In this situation, the victim’s family lost faith in the police investigation.

Family in court

Dissatisfied with the police investigation, the family first appealed to the special court in Baharampur. A CBI or CID investigation was demanded there but it was rejected. After that, the family filed an appeal in Calcutta High Court. A second post-mortem was ordered by the court and the report is said to have found several discrepancies.

Order to constitute SIT for impartial investigation

After a lengthy hearing, the High Court ordered the formation of the SIT to maintain transparency in the investigation. A five-member team headed by IPS officer Pranab Kumar will investigate. The court has made it clear that there should be no political influence in the investigation. Because it can destroy the trust of the common people in the judicial system.
