Successor not decided, party worried, what is Nitish Kumar thinking for JDU?
Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar is going to Rajya Sabha. 10 days have passed, it has not yet been decided who will get the command of Janata Dal United. JDU has veteran leaders like Lalan Singh, Sanjay Jha, Vijay Kumar Chaudhary and Bijendra Prasad Yadav but everyone is silent on who will replace Nitish Kumar.
Now there is panic regarding change of leadership in JDU. Party leaders are mentioning in hushed tones that this situation has arisen to some extent because of Nitish Kumar. For more than a year, JDU leaders were continuously asking Nitish Kumar to give a chance to Nishant Kumar in the party.
Nishant Kumar is the son of Nitish Kumar. Upendra Kushwaha, president of ally party Rashtriya Lok Manch, had first demanded that Nitish Kumar declare him as his successor. Questions have been raised about Nitish Kumar’s health for a long time. Now, due to not being able to decide the successor in time, the concern about the future of the party has increased.

Why did Nitish Kumar not put forward Nishant Kumar?
Nitish Kumar’s son Nishant Kumar always keeps a low profile. On March 8, he took membership of JDU, it has not yet been decided what role the party is going to give him. Only Sanjay Jha will not take decisions in the party. This decision will not be taken without Nitish Kumar’s approval. Nitish Kumar is not able to do anything on this issue by being vocal right now.
Will Nishant be promoted?
It does not seem so from Nitish Kumar’s stance. Nitish Kumar has always expressed his political desire against familyism or dynasty politics. Now he himself is shying away because of his past. Nitish Kumar agreed to join the party even when he has indicated his separation from the active politics of the state. Nishant Kumar is a novice in politics, hence it is doubtful whether he will get a big role.
If not Nitish Kumar then who will handle JDU?
Political analysts of Bihar say that if Nitish Kumar withdraws from active role in the party, the party may disintegrate. The party can be united only in his name. Nishant Kumar may have been out of the party but people can see the image of Nitish Kumar in him. Familyism is the truth of politics.
Analysts argue that just like Akhilesh Yadav got the reins of Samajwadi Party, Tejashwi got the reins of Rashtriya Janata Party, similarly, Nishant Kumar is going to get the reins of JDU. Many leaders have vocally said that Nishant is the only person around whom the party can unite.

Are you secretly betting on Nitish Kumar and Nishant?
Those who understand Nitish Kumar’s politics know that as long as he himself is the Chief Minister and is in charge of the party, if he allows his son to enter politics, he will be surrounded by dynasty politics. JDU has been a party critical of dynasty politics. Nitish Kumar himself has always been against dynasty politics and thought that if the son had joined now, it would not have looked good during his activism. If Nishant had come first then this sudden exit of Nitish ji would not have seemed so sudden.

What will happen if Nitish Kumar leaves?
Nitish Kumar’s departure from Bihar means the end of the top leadership of the party. Analysts believe that Nishant should have joined a few years ago. He should have had experience in some organizational post or in the Legislative Council. Then there would not be so much difficulty in handing over the legacy of the party. Now the party will face difficulties in finding an alternative.
What is the matter of relief for JDU?
JDU still has a chance. Neither Assembly nor Lok Sabha elections are going to be held in Bihar. Nishant Kumar and the party have a chance to prepare. He has a humble image, people like him, he has been so unknown that people want to know about him. There is currently no leader of his level in the party, who gets widespread support from the OBC class. Now it remains to be seen who JDU gives a chance to.

Who deserves the top leadership of JDU?
There are three leaders in JDU, who are currently counted after Nitish Kumar. First Rajeev Ranjan alias Lalan Singh. There are also ministers at the Centre. Party’s working president Sanjay Jha is at second place and Vijay Kumar Choudhary is at third place. All three come from upper castes. Census data conducted in 2011 shows that more than 60 percent of the population in Bihar belongs to the OBC category. Politics of Bihar is also caste based. In such a situation, JDU will find a leader of Nitish Kumar’s stature, only then the equation will be settled.

What equations are being created in Bihar?
With Nitish Kumar going to Rajya Sabha, it is certain that BJP will stake claim for the post of Chief Minister. The party has put forward Nitish Kumar for two decades, now it wants to take its leader forward. There, there are many contenders for the post of CM. According to sources, JDU is still in a state of confusion in promoting Nishant Kumar. Right now there is only speculation that Nishant can be made Deputy CM.
Some sources say that instead of joining the government, Nishant will understand the party from outside. Will visit the entire Bihar at the grassroots level, after which he can choose his role in the government. Now the biggest challenge before the party is to create a strong leadership around Nishant that will work according to him. He will not be comfortable in front of old leaders. Mostly, it is his father’s friends with whom Nishant may find it difficult to work. He may hesitate in taking decisions independently.
