After Tehran, why is Isfahan a constant target of America and Israel?

Amidst the increasing military tension in Iran, after the capital, Isfahan, the country’s major industrial city, is also being attacked continuously. According to reports, thick black smoke was seen rising in many parts of the city after the early morning air strikes. According to international news agencies, at least 15 people have died due to the targeting of factories and military bases in the early hours of Sunday.

Reports say that about 200 cities of Iran were targeted in the recent attacks, among which Isfahan is prominent. Isfahan is the third largest city in the country after the capital Tehran and Mashhad and is considered an important industrial and military center of Iran. Many important establishments related to missile and defense production are present here.

Along with strategic importance, Isfahan is also a very rich city from cultural point of view. Naqsh-e-Jahan Square, considered an excellent example of Safavid architecture of the 16th-17th century, is located in this city, which has also been recognized as a World Heritage.

Iran has several sensitive installations around the city, including nuclear research centers, missile production facilities, a major oil refinery and air force bases. According to the report of British daily The Guardian, because of these bases, Isfahan has long been an important part of Iran’s strategic structure.

Isfahan is also a major center of Iran’s steel industry. The Mubarak Steel Company located here is counted among the largest steel producers in the Middle East. Apart from this, there is also a large Air Force base in the city, where Iran’s fleet of old American-made F-14 Tomcat fighter planes is said to be deployed.

Analysts believe that these attacks indicate that the strategy is to seriously weaken Iran’s industrial and military capabilities. Damage to industry and defense infrastructure could also put pressure on the country’s economy and affect its ability to spend on nuclear and military projects.

In the context of regional politics, it is also believed that if Iran becomes economically and militarily weak, it will be able to provide limited support to organizations that Israel has long considered a threat to itself, such as Hamas and Hezbollah. These increasing attacks in the Middle East and the fear of retaliation have created new concerns about regional stability and global security.
