Don’t consider a blocked nose after waking up in the morning as a minor cold! Know the 6 big reasons behind this

Morning Congestion Causes: Often, many people’s morning starts with a blocked nose, constant sneezing and heaviness in the head instead of freshness. Most people ignore it considering it to be a common cold or change in weather. But do you know that this seemingly minor problem can actually be chronic rhinitis. If it is not taken care of in time, this condition can worsen and lead to serious problems like enlargement of sinus or nasal bone.

Why does stiffness increase?

In Ayurveda, chronic cold is mainly linked to the imbalance of Kapha dosha in the body. When the amount of phlegm in the body increases excessively, it starts accumulating in the respiratory tract and head parts. This phlegm accumulates while sleeping at night, which is felt in the form of blocked nose and heaviness upon waking up in the morning.

  • Lack of sleep disturbs the natural cycles of the body and aggravates Kapha dosha.
  • Consuming cold water from the refrigerator, ice cream or cold food items triggers cold.
  • Frequent infections are a sign that your body is not able to fight off external allergens.
  • Fine particles present in the air cause swelling in the nasal membrane.
  • Eating curd, rice or heavy food at night increases the formation of phlegm in the body.
  • Many times, stomach acid reaches the throat at night and causes congestion in the nasal passages.

How to get relief sitting at home

A very simple and effective solution for chronic cold is hidden in Ayurveda. Small changes can make your morning pleasant.

  • Drink lukewarm water first thing in the morning. It helps in melting the phlegm and expelling it.
  • Take steam at least twice a week. This clears the respiratory tract and reduces swelling.
  • Consuming ginger, basil and black pepper tea detoxifies the lungs.
  • It is very beneficial to put one drop of lukewarm oil (like molecular oil or mustard oil) in the nose before sleeping at night.
  • Consuming turmeric milk before sleeping at night increases the body’s immunity.
