- Polls in five states will change BCCI schedule?
- Hanging sword on April 7 and 10 matches!
By Election Commission The schedule of assembly elections of five states has been announced today. After these announcements, there is only one discussion in the sports world, viz Indian Premier League (IPL 2026) of the schedule. BCCI had earlier announced the schedule till April 12 (first 20 matches) only, keeping in mind the elections in five states. However, now after the actual dates of polling are revealed, there is a strong possibility that this schedule will be modified.
Guwahati matches affected by polling in Assam?
As per the Election Commission announcement, polling for 126 assembly seats in Assam will be held in a single phase on April 9, 2026. On the other hand, as per the IPL schedule, an important match is scheduled on April 7 in Guwahati, the capital of Assam. It will be a big challenge in front of the administration to manage both the security arrangements for polling and the security of IPL at the same time.

Hanging sword on April 7 and 10 matches!
As polling is on April 9, election campaigning is stopped two days before, from April 7 itself, and security arrangements are tightened. The entire police force and administration are busy with polling preparations and booth management. Likewise, organizing a match on the evening of April 7 and again playing another match on April 10 immediately after the end of polling, could be a major headache for the police.
A major challenge for the security system
Security forces have many responsibilities during elections, such as:
- EVM Security: Delivering and securing EVM machines to polling stations.
- Border Security: As Assam borders Bangladesh, more security has to be maintained in sensitive areas.
- VIP Security: Ensuring 24-hour security of players, team staff and thousands of spectators becomes difficult during election time.
What is BCCI’s ‘Plan B’?
It is believed that the BCCI will hold preliminary discussions with the government and local administrations before announcing the schedule. However, the availability of police force becomes a key issue in the actual election battleground. If the Assam government shows its inability, the dates of matches in Guwahati may be changed or these matches may be shifted to another city. The BCCI will soon announce the complete IPL 2026 schedule, which will provide more clarity on matches in Guwahati and other polling states.
