P. Chidambaram welcomes election announcement, appreciates voting in fewer phases!
The Election Commission has announced elections in four states and one union territory of the country on Sunday. Senior Congress leader and former Finance Minister P. Chidambaram has welcomed the Election Commission’s announcement.

The Election Commission announced the schedule of assembly elections in Assam, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and West Bengal in a press conference on Sunday. Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar said that voting will be held in a single phase on April 9 in Assam, Kerala and Puducherry. In Tamil Nadu too, voting will be held in one phase on April 23, while in West Bengal, voting will be held in two phases on April 23 and 29. The results of all states will be declared together on May 4.
With the announcement of elections in the five states and union territories, the Model Code of Conduct has come into force with immediate effect.
Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar said that the Commission has visited all the election states in the last few days, reviewed the preparations and talked to political parties, officials and voters.
The Chief Election Commissioner said that the Election Commission team went to these states and took stock of the preparations for the assembly elections. During this, all the political parties were met and their suggestions were also taken. Besides, detailed discussions were also held with officials of enforcement agencies, district election officers, police officers, state election officers and directors general of police.
He said that the Commission also interacted with the youth and first time voters. Apart from this, the work of Booth Level Officers (BLOs) who play an important role in smoothening the election process was also appreciated.
CEC Gyanesh Kumar said that these five states and union territories are quite different from each other geographically and culturally. In such a situation, to ensure fair and transparent elections, Special Intensive Review (SIR) was conducted, so that no eligible voter is deprived of voting and no ineligible person can be included in the voter list.
