Big demonstration in Ladakh demanding statehood, people took to the streets
Tezzbuzz Desk – The movement has once again intensified in Ladakh demanding constitutional rights and democratic representation. Major social and political organizations of the region organized massive protests on 16 March, demanding full statehood for Ladakh and special protection under the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution.
This protest was organized under the leadership of Leh Apex Body (LAB) and Kargil Democratic Alliance (KDA). These organizations say that for the last six years the people of Ladakh have not got adequate democratic representation and constitutional protection. In such a situation, people’s voices are becoming increasingly louder for justice, rights and restoration of democracy.
Sonam Wangchuk’s custody canceled
Meanwhile, the Central Government, taking an important step towards calming the movement, canceled the custody of climate activist Sonam Wangchuk. He was earlier detained under the National Security Act (NSA). However, despite his release, the agitating organizations decided to continue the protest as per the schedule.
‘The allegations are completely baseless’
Leh Apex Body co-chairman Tsering Dorje Lakruk said that the protest will be held on March 16 as per the pre-planned schedule. He said that the cancellation of Sonam Wangchuk’s custody is a welcome step and it also reveals the truth of the allegations against her.
Lakaruk said that Wangchuk’s release has brought honor and relief to the people of Ladakh as all the allegations against him have now been proven baseless.
Decision to continue protests
According to the leaders of the movement, the issue was discussed with the Kargil Democratic Alliance and other concerned organizations. It was decided by consensus of all parties that the protests would continue, as the main demands of the movement—particularly constitutional protection for Ladakh—had not yet been met.
LG appealed to postpone the demonstration
LAB leaders said that the Lieutenant Governor of Ladakh had contacted them and appealed to postpone the protest on March 16. On this, the leaders of the apex body made it clear that no such decision can be taken alone. For this, it is necessary to discuss with all the organizations and concerned parties.
