Clean sweep of NDA in Bihar Rajya Sabha elections, Shivesh Ram wins by one vote.
The National Democratic Alliance (NDA) has registered a landslide victory on all five Rajya Sabha seats in Bihar. Although, from the very beginning, the victory of NDA candidates on four seats was considered almost certain, but the contest for the fifth seat was considered to be very interesting and tough.
Shivesh Ram defeated Amarendradhari Singh
In the end, this seat also went to NDA and its candidate Shivesh Ram defeated Grand Alliance candidate Amarendradhari Singh in a very close contest. In the voting held during the Rajya Sabha elections, Shivesh Ram got the support of a total of 38 MLAs, while Amarendradhari Singh could get only 37 votes. In this way, Shivesh Ram won by a margin of just one vote and made his place in the Rajya Sabha.
This result was shocking because earlier the Grand Alliance was claiming that their candidate had the support of 41 MLAs. Grand alliance leader Tejashwi Yadav had tried to garner additional support to strengthen his side before the elections. He increased the number of supporting MLAs from 35 to 41 by securing the support of five MLAs of All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) and the lone MLA of Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP). Despite this, the equations seemed to be changing at the time of voting.
Some MLAs did not take part in voting
In fact, some MLAs of Congress and Rashtriya Janata Dal did not participate in the voting, which caused a big blow to the Grand Alliance. Apart from Congress’s Surendra Prasad, Manohar Prasad and Manoj Biswas, RJD MLA Faisal Rehman remained absent during voting. Due to non-voting of these four MLAs, the hopes of the Grand Alliance were dealt a deep blow and the vote count of their candidate came down to 37. Due to this, NDA got the lead and Shivesh Ram won by a very small margin.
On the other hand, all the NDA MLAs appeared united and all 202 MLAs of the alliance took part in the voting. NDA got the benefit of this unity and captured all five seats. All the candidates fielded by NDA were victorious in this election. These include Bharatiya Janata Party leaders Nitin Naveen and Shivesh Ram, Ramnath Thakur and one other candidate from Janata Dal (United), while Upendra Kushwaha from Rashtriya Lok Morcha. With the victory of all five leaders, NDA has demonstrated its strong hold in the Rajya Sabha elections.
After this result, new questions have arisen in the politics of Bihar regarding the strategy and unity within the Grand Alliance, because the absence of MLAs at the last moment changed the entire equation.
