Played in Tripura! Why did Pradyot Debbarma start challenging his ally BJP?
National President of Tipra Motha Party, Pradyot Kishore Manikya Debbarma is continuously posing a challenge to the old parties like Bharatiya Janata Party, Congress and Communist Party in Tripura politics. By talking about tribals and their interests, Debbarma of the royal family is gaining tremendous support from the tribals, which is benefiting them in the elections. Pradyot has shown his and his party’s strength in the 2023 assembly elections. In the last elections, he performed better than Congress and Communist Party and won 13 seats. This was the first assembly election of Tipra Motha.
Now once again Pradyot Debbarma is going to show his strength. This time he has challenged the ruling party BJP. He on Saturday said his party will contest all 28 seats in the upcoming Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC) elections and defeat the BJP. After his announcement, there has been a stir in the BJP camp. In such a situation, let us know why Pradyot Debbarma has started challenging his ally BJP…
Alliance of Tipra Motha and BJP
In fact, Tipra Motha leader Pradyot Debbarma has been demanding for a long time to create ‘Greater Tipraland’ for the tribals in the state. With this demand, he had registered a resounding victory in the 2023 assembly elections. In the assembly elections, no party in Tripura was able to garner such strong support on tribal issues alone. But, Debbarma showed that the tribals of the state trust him.

Seeing the strength of Tipra Motha, BJP contacted party president Pradyot Debbarma and formed an alliance with him after several rounds of talks. After this, Tipra Motha joined the BJP-led Manik Saha government in the state. Some leaders of the party are also ministers in the government of Tripura. Currently there is an alliance between Tipra Motha and BJP. This is the reason why both the parties together contested the 2024 Lok Sabha elections and won.
Where is the problem for BJP?
Pradyot Debbarma addressed a large rally at the motor stand at Khumulwang near the headquarters of Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC) on March 14. Thousands of people came to attend his rally and listen to him. In this meeting, she challenged her colleague and said that Tipra Motha will contest the upcoming elections against BJP and will defeat it on all 28 seats.
Debbarma said that the combat workers of Tipra Motha are ready to take on the BJP in every constituency. He said, ‘Chief Minister Manik Saha has said that he will contest elections on 28 Zilla Parishad seats. But there will be a problem for them, Tipra Motha workers will contest on all 28 seats and will defeat you.

Pradyot Debbarma criticized the current political debate in Tripura. Without naming the BJP, he claimed that the parties were focusing on religious divisions instead of issues affecting the ‘Tiprasa community’ such as poverty, education, roads, water and land rights.
‘Don’t get lured by BJP’
He also alleged that BJP broke the alliance with Tipra Motha. He said that when he started pushing for ‘Tiprasa Agreement’ with BJP, efforts were being made to suppress his voice. Debbarma also cautioned voters against political greed during elections and alleged that the ruling BJP may try to woo people with money and promises.
He said that my struggle has always been for the welfare of the poor. He has faced political pressure and criticism over the past six years, but he remains determined to fight for the rights and future of the people of Tiprasa. He said, ‘I tell Khumulwang that we are ready to defeat BJP. challenged accepted.’

What is Greater Tipraland?
The politics of Tipra Motha and its leader Pradyot Debbarma currently rests on Greater Tipraland. The interests of the tribals of the state are linked to this. Their main demand is Greater Tipraland. Its objective is to ensure greater political-administrative rights and security for the tribal people of Tripura. The tribals of the state are considered the original inhabitants here.
What will we get from Greater Tipraland?
- Giving more powers to Tripura Tribal Area Autonomous District Council.
- To also connect the Tiprasi tribals living outside Tripura with this framework.
- This includes giving constitutional protection to tribal language, culture and land rights.
Why did this demand arise?
In fact, there has been a major population change over time in the history of Tripura. After independence, a large number of Bengali refugees from East Pakistan (1947) and Bangladesh after 1971 came to live in Tripura. Due to this, the tribal population already living in Tripura became a minority. Tribal organizations say their land, culture and political representation were diminished in the state. This is the reason why along with the tribals, Tipra Motha also demands a separate autonomous region.
