Ricky Ponting also acknowledged the strength of Team India
T20 World Cup :: The Indian team, which created history by winning the T20 World Cup 2026, is now being praised by veteran cricketers from all over the world. Former Australian captain Ricky Ponting has described the current Indian team as the strongest team in T20I cricket so far. He believes that the team’s experience and consistent performance have made it different from other teams.
Ricky Ponting said in the ICC program The ICC Review that the current Indian team has excellent balance and depth. He said that it is very difficult to argue against this. If you see, not only the T20I team but their record in white ball format in ICC tournaments in the last 5-6 years has been quite excellent. He said that even before the start of this tournament, many people had probably recognized the depth and strength of the current Indian team and how much experience they have.
IPL honed Indian players
Ponting said that not only the T20 team but this white ball team of India is very strong. Hats off to them for winning two consecutive World Cups. He said that one thing that probably gets less attention about this current team is how much experience these players have and how much cricket they have played. Be it international cricket or just IPL.
Ponting believes that Indian players have a lot of experience of playing under pressure, a major reason for which is IPL. According to him, IPL matches are as big and stressful as international matches, due to which Indian players get used to playing on the big stage.
Excellent record in ICC tournaments
The Indian team has been performing consistently well in limited overs cricket in the last few years. India has suffered only two defeats in the four major ICC tournaments played since the end of 2023. One of these defeats was against Australia in the final of the ODI World Cup 2023, while the other defeat was against South Africa in the Super-8 stage of the T20 World Cup 2026.
