Where to watch ‘Hamnet’: Shakespeare-inspired film draws global attention
The film “Hamnet,” inspired by the life of legendary playwright William Shakespeare, has emerged as one of the most talked-about films of the year following its strong presence at the 98th Academy Awards.
Based on Maggie O’Farrell’s 2020 novel of the same name, the film explores the emotional impact of the tragic death of Shakespeare’s son Hamnet, who died at the age of 11. The story imagines how this devastating loss may have influenced Shakespeare while writing his famous play Hamlet.
A deeply emotional story inspired by history
The film stars Paul Mescal as William Shakespeare and Jessie Buckley as his wife Agnes Hathaway. While historical records about Shakespeare’s personal life are limited, the novel and film present a fictionalised interpretation of how the couple may have dealt with grief after losing their son.
Interestingly, the film also highlights that during Shakespeare’s time, the names Hamnet and Hamlet were often used interchangeably.
Buckley’s performance as Agnes — a woman struggling with grief while navigating her complicated relationship with her husband — has received widespread praise from critics and audiences alike.
Strong Oscar presence and global success
Hamnet was a major contender at this year’s Oscars, earning eight nominations, including Best Picture, Best Director for Chloé Zhao, Best Actress for Jessie Buckley, Best Adapted Screenplay, and Best Casting.
The emotionally powerful drama has also performed well commercially, earning nearly $100 million worldwide at the box office.
Its intense portrayal of loss and family relationships has resonated deeply with viewers, making it one of the standout literary adaptations in recent cinema.
Where audiences can watch the film
Currently, Hamnet is streaming on Peacock, the platform operated by Universal Pictures’ parent company.
Viewers can also rent the film digitally on platforms such as Amazon Prime Video and Apple TV.
Under Universal’s streaming agreement, the film is expected to move to Prime Video later in the year, after completing its initial streaming window on Peacock. If the current schedule holds, Hamnet could become available on Prime Video around July 2026.
Peacock offers two subscription plans — Premium with ads and Premium Plus without ads, with annual plans available for viewers looking to save on subscription costs.
With its powerful storytelling and strong performances, Hamnet continues to attract global attention, particularly among audiences drawn to historical drama and literary adaptations.
