The film “Hamnet,” inspired by the life of legendary playwright William Shakespeare, has emerged as one of the most talked-about films of the year following its strong presence at the 98th Academy Awards.
Based on Maggie O’Farrell’s 2020 novel of the same name, the film explores the emotional impact of the tragic death of Shakespeare’s son Hamnet, who died at the age of 11. The story imagines how this devastating loss may have influenced Shakespeare while writing his famous play Hamlet.

The film stars Paul Mescal as William Shakespeare and Jessie Buckley as his wife Agnes Hathaway. While historical records about Shakespeare’s personal life are limited, the novel and film present a fictionalised interpretation of how the couple may have dealt with grief after losing their son.
Interestingly, the film also highlights that during Shakespeare’s time, the names Hamnet and Hamlet were often used interchangeably.

Currently, Hamnet is streaming on Peacock, the platform operated by Universal Pictures’ parent company.
Viewers can also rent the film digitally on platforms such as Amazon Prime Video and Apple TV.
Under Universal’s streaming agreement, the film is expected to move to Prime Video later in the year, after completing its initial streaming window on Peacock. If the current schedule holds, Hamnet could become available on Prime Video around July 2026.
