If the government knew that the LPG crisis would increase in the country then why did it not take strict steps… lashed out at Modi government.
New Delhi. Congress President and Rajya Sabha MP Mallikarjun Kharge has targeted the Modi government over the ongoing LPG crisis in the country. He said that, when the government knew that the LPG crisis could increase in the country, then why were no major steps taken. Our Petroleum Minister claimed in the Lok Sabha that there is no shortage of LPG. Said to be careful of rumours. But the ground reality proves the government claims wrong.

Speaking in the Rajya Sabha, Mallikarjun Kharge said, I want to draw the attention of this House towards the LPG crisis in the country due to the ongoing conflict in West Asia. There is an outcry in the entire country due to the LPG crisis. Its impact is very bad on the poor and vulnerable sections, middle-class, common houses, restaurants, hostels and commercial users.
India imports about 60% of its total LPG requirements. In this too, 90% of imports take place through the Strait of Hormuz. In this context, the current situation has become a matter of serious concern for both domestic availability and price stability. It is affecting almost every part of the country. People are worried at home. Small eateries, restaurants, hostels, everything is affected. From community kitchens to Ram Rasoi are closed. Not only households but MSMEs and other commercial users are facing huge problems in getting LPG cylinders.
It is a matter of concern that many establishments have limited or closed their operations. Some are buying at higher prices, more than ₹5,000 per cylinder. Our Petroleum Minister claimed in the Lok Sabha that there is no shortage of LPG. Said to be careful of rumours. But the ground reality proves the government claims wrong.
Speaker, when the government was issuing advisory to Indian citizens in Iran that the situation could worsen, it should have made it clear that it could also impact critical maritime routes and energy supplies. We had to prepare in that respect.
The waiting period for cylinder booking in the country was also increased to 25 days in cities and 45 days in villages/remote areas. Due to this, panic booking has started and the possibility of hoarding has increased.

If the government knew that the LPG crisis would increase in the country, then why did the government not take strict steps, why did it not take the people into confidence. This crisis exposes the poor management and poor foreign policy of the government. My demand is that the government should immediately take strict steps in this matter and provide cylinders at affordable prices to all small traders including the public.
