Mumbai Indians in search of record sixth title! ‘Hitman’ ready for IPL 2026 after impressing with bat in training camp
India and former Mumbai Indians captain Rohit Sharma has joined the five-time IPL champions Mumbai Indians team, which has created an atmosphere of excitement among the fans of the team. Rohit Sharma has won the IPL title six times, once with Deccan Chargers and five times as captain of Mumbai Indians. He is the joint most successful captain in the tournament’s history. The former opener made his IPL debut for Mumbai Indians in 2011 and was named captain in 2013.
The ‘Hitman’ led Mumbai to victory in his first season as captain and captained MI for 11 years till the 2024 season. In 2024, star all-rounder Hardik Pandya replaced him as captain. In fact, Rohit Sharma (IPL 2026) is the highest run-scorer in the history of Mumbai Indians and is among the top four batsmen who have scored more than 6,000 runs in IPL.

In the 2013 IPL season, he scored a remarkable batting total of 538 runs in the entire tournament and helped Mumbai Indians win the tournament. Mumbai won the trophy in 2017, 2019 and 2020 under Rohit’s captaincy.
MI began the official pre-season training on Monday, marking the first session of the upcoming 2026 season. According to a press release, head coach Mahela Jayawardene led the on-field session. He was joined by bowling coaches Paras Mhambre and Lasith Malinga, fielding coach Carl Hopkinson, as well as the entire strength and conditioning and physiotherapy support teams.
“There is always something special about the first day of the pre-season. The players arrive, the excitement is at its peak and the goal is to get off to a strong start. We have players who know the franchise very well and some new, exciting faces coming into the team,” Mumbai Indians head coach Mahela Jayawardene said.

Jayawardene added, “Day 1 sets the tone for the entire campaign. We wanted everyone to feel how we practise, prepare and perform for each other from the very first session. The first session is always exciting, but it’s also the start of something serious and we know where we’re going.”
As preparations for the tournament are in full swing, the rest of the squad is likely to join the camp in the coming days. Rohit’s performance for Mumbai Indians in IPL 2025 has often been used as an ‘Impact Player’. The ‘Hitman’ got off to a slow start and struggled to find rhythm in the opening matches. Rohit then made a brilliant comeback, scoring two consecutive fifties and 148 runs in 15 matches to help Mumbai Indians reach the playoffs.
