‘Sarke Chunar Teri’ controversy: NHRC issues notice and seeks report

The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has issued notices to many important institutions, taking a tough stand on the controversial song ‘Sarke Chunar Teri’ from the film ‘KD: The Devil’. The Commission has sought action taken report (ATR) within two weeks.

The lyrics of the song are being described as obscene, sexually provocative and full of double meanings, which can prove fatal for children and minors. Its wide reach on television, social media and other platforms is causing mental health and moral degradation of the youth.

A bench led by member Priyank Kanungo, taking suo motu cognizance under Section 12 of the Human Rights Protection Act, considered it a violation of children’s rights. The complaint expressed concern over the increasing trend of obscenity in mainstream entertainment.

Instructions have been given to the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC), Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology, Ministry of Information and Broadcasting and Google India. Everyone will have to investigate the songs and submit a detailed report to the commission.

The NHRC clarified that it has the powers of a civil court and strict action will be taken if the report is not received. The complainant has demanded to issue guidelines to stop such content in future.

This case underlines the need for controls on media content, especially in the context of protecting minors.
