Here’s why LSG’s explosive top order could be the biggest threat in IPL 2026

Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) will enter IPL 2026 with what looks like one of the fiercest top order batting units the competition has ever seen. The franchise, which came into existence in 2022 has already seen its share of highs and lows. LSG reached the playoffs in their first two seasons and missed out on last two.

Despite boasting several T20 stars from around the world, the team is still waiting to get its hands on the IPL trophy. The presence of players like Mitchell Marsh, Aiden Markram, Nicholas Pooran and Rishabh Pant gives the side a powerful core in the top order.

Given the fast-paced nature of the league and the batting-friendly surfaces most venues offer, LSG’s top order could easily become a serious headache for opposition teams if things click early in the season.

Here are four top-order stars who might define LSG’s season:

1. Mitchell Marsh

Mitchell Marsh will open the batting again, just like last season. The explosive right-handed batsman, often known as “Bison”, has the ability to turn a match on its head in a matter of overs.

We saw exactly that during the previous campaign when Marsh piled up 627 runs in 13 innings at a strike rate of 163.71. The run included a superb century as well, showing the kind of damage he can cause when he settles in.

With plenty of experience on his shoulders and flashes of brilliance we have already seen in the past, Marsh will once again be a crucial pillar in LSG’s top order.

2. Aiden Markram

Aiden Markram partnered Marsh at the top last season and showed glimpses of what he can bring to the table. The South African batsman is now in red-hot form and will carry a big responsibility at the top of the order.

In the recently concluded T20 World Cup, Markram scored 286 runs in eight innings at a strike rate of more than 165. Those numbers clearly reflect the kind of rhythm he is currently batting with.

If he carries that momentum into the IPL, Markram could easily turn into a dangerous customer for rival bowling attacks.

3. Nicholas Pooran

Nicholas Pooran has been the backbone of LSG’s batting since the franchise entered the league. The former Caribbean star and six-hitting machine has undoubtedly been one of the most feared batters in the tournament, especially when spinners come into the attack.

There is also a strong possibility that LSG could use him at number four this season. If that happens, teams will have to come up with solid plans to slow him down.

During the 2025 season, Pooran smashed 524 runs, but what truly stood out was his staggering strike rate, which hovered just below the 200 mark. Once Pooran spends some time at the crease, it becomes extremely difficult for bowlers to contain him.

4. Rishabh Pant

The spotlight will also be firmly on Rishabh Pant, the most expensive player in the history of the IPL. Pant faced a lot of questions from analysts during the previous season, especially due to his poor form with the bat.

However, he reminded everyone of his class with a blistering century in LSG’s final league game last season. That knock once again highlighted his destructive power and ability to change the course of a match.

Pant is expected to play a major role at number three this year. With the captaincy responsibility as well, the LSG skipper will have a huge role to play if the team wants to go deep into the tournament.

A strong batting unit, but bowling must support

There is no doubt that LSG possess some sensational batting talent and the team is likely to produce plenty of runs this season with the lineup they have assembled.

We saw something similar last season, yet somehow they still couldn’t make it into the top four. A lot of it came down to the bowling unit. At times it looked a bit inexperienced and the team ended up missing a few key moments in tight games. There were matches where LSG seemed in control for most part, but the result slipped away in the final overs.

So yes, the batting strength heading into IPL 2026 looks like a big positive for LSG. No doubt about that. But cricket rarely works with just one department firing. The bowlers will have to step up too and deliver when the pressure builds. If that balance finally comes together, LSG might just find themselves properly in the title race this time.
