Emmanuel Macron spoke on phone with Iranian President Masood Pezeshkian, said- ‘Iran should stop attacks on regional countries’

Paris: French President Emmanuel Macron has spoken on phone with Iranian President Masoud Pejeshkian. The communication took place amid rising tensions and regional conflict in the Middle East, where Iran and its backed groups are being accused of attacks on various countries. Macron, sharing details of this conversation on X, appealed to Iran to immediately stop the attacks.

What did Macron say?

Macron wrote in his post that he urged Pejeshkian to immediately stop the unacceptable attacks Iran is carrying out against regional countries, either directly or through its proxy groups (such as in Lebanon and Iraq). He stressed that France’s stance is entirely defensive, aimed at safeguarding its interests, regional allies and freedom of navigation. Macron clearly said that targeting France is completely unacceptable.

He expressed deep concern over the uncontrolled increase in violence in the region and said that this situation is pushing the entire region towards anarchy. Its serious consequences are visible at present and will impact the future also. Everyone including the people of Iran is paying the price for Macron.

French soldier died in attack

The talks came as an Iran-designed drone strike in Iraq’s Kurdistan region (near Erbil) killed a French soldier, Arnaud Frion, and injured six others. This is the first case in which a French soldier has been killed since the Middle East conflict began. Referring to this incident, Macron warned Iran that attacks on French interests will not be tolerated.

Discussion on Hormuz Strait and other issues

Macron sought to restore freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz, as it is vital to global oil trade and any blockage could trigger an energy crisis. He called for a new political-security framework for peace, including guarantees that Iran will not acquire nuclear weapons, address its ballistic missile program and regional destabilizing activities.

Additionally, Macron demanded the release of French citizens Cecile Kohler and Jacques Parisi detained in Iran and urged their early safe return to France.

It is clear from Macron’s appeal that France wants stability in the region, but considers Iran’s activities as a major threat. The Iranian side has confirmed the talks, but a detailed response has not yet come. According to Iranian media, the two leaders discussed regional issues.
