“Gautam Gambhir always prioritises the team over individuals”: R Ashwin

Ravichandran Ashwin felt his Test career was over when the team management opted for the younger Washington Sundar over him during India’s tour of Australia. The seasoned spinner, sidelined from the playing XI, announced his retirement. Speaking at a recent event in Kolkata, Ashwin shared how he recognised that his chapter with the national side had reached its natural end. “At Perth, I led the bowling attack. When Washi played that Test, I understood that my journey had reached its end,” he said.

Ashwin’s exit after the Brisbane Test sparked debate over the team’s handling of senior players, especially after the retirements of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli. Head coach Gautam Gambhir came under fire on social media, with fans accusing the management of forcing stalwarts out. Ashwin, however, dismissed such claims and praised Gambhir’s strategy.

“I have a lot of respect for Gautam. People may have their own views about him, but he always prioritises the team over individuals. He gives credit to the group, not just players, and I really admire that,” Ashwin added.

The veteran spinner spoke about the environment inside India’s dressing room and how the squad always prioritised team success rather than star power. “Indian cricket is bigger than just a few individuals,” he said.

Looking back on his career alongside Kohli and Rohit, Ashwin spoke about the strong camaraderie that defined their time together in the Indian setup.

“The best part was that none of us ever blamed each other. Our goal to win for India and make the country proud. That kept us driven,” he mentioned.

Ashwin, who concluded his Test journey with 500-plus scalps, commented on the obstacles Team India faced.

“The team is going through transition. Facing quality spin is a challenge, but I don’t see batting as a major concern,” he concluded.
