Big salary this time! 8th Pay Commission can bring ‘money rain’

New Delhi. Expectations regarding the 8th Pay Commission are continuously increasing for central government employees and pensioners. The new suggestions that have emerged, especially regarding the “fitment factor”, have further strengthened the possibility of a big jump in salary and pension.

Although the commission is still in its initial stage, there is constant pressure being put on behalf of employee organizations and pensioners that this time the fitment factor should be such that it can provide real relief in accordance with the rising inflation.

What is fitment factor?

Fitment factor is the multiplier by which the old basic salary is converted into the new salary. On the basis of this, the increase in pension and other allowances is also decided. Simply put, the higher the fitment factor, the higher the salary and pension.

3.0 Demand for fitment factor

This time the Federation of National Postal Organizations has demanded to take the fitment factor to 3.0. If this happens, there may be a big jump in the basic salary of the employees. Although earlier reports had estimated it between 1.82 and 2.46, current demands have pushed this range higher.

Hybrid Formula: The New Gamechanger?

The most interesting aspect this time is the proposal of “Hybrid Formula”. Pensioners’ organizations have suggested that three different models be combined to decide the fitment factor. Dr. Ackroyd’s formula, 7th Pay Commission’s approach and 5th Pay Commission’s Constant Relative Income Model. The objective of this combined model is to create a balanced fitment factor that can accurately reflect both the current economic situation and inflation.

Changing needs should also be accommodated

It has also been said in the proposal that now it is not enough to decide the salary only on the basis of food and basic needs. In today’s era, the rising cost of internet, digital services, health insurance and treatment should also be included in the calculations. Apart from this, it has been suggested to consider the family unit as 4 members instead of 3, so that the actual expenditure can be assessed correctly.

Different formula for different levels?

It has also been said in some suggestions that the fitment factor may be different according to different grades of employees. However, emphasis has been laid on maintaining equality in the case of pensioners, so that no imbalance arises.

When will the final report of the new pay commission come?

At present the 8th Pay Commission is in the process of collecting data and taking suggestions. It is expected that its final report may come out by 2027 and it may also be implemented in the same year. Experts believe that if the pressure from unions continues, the fitment factor could be 3.0 or more. However, the final decision will be taken keeping in mind the financial condition of the government.
