Vinícius Jr breaks silence on Etihad celebration controversy
Vinícius Júnior has responded to criticism surrounding his celebration during Real Madrid’s emphatic 5-1 aggregate victory over Manchester City in the UEFA Champions League Round of 16.
The Brazilian forward found himself at the center of controversy after celebrating in front of City fans by holding up his shirt and pointing to his number. The gesture was perceived by some as provocative, prompting backlash from sections of the home support and reportedly from within the City camp.
However, Vinícius was quick to dismiss claims of disrespect, insisting that his actions were simply a response to previous events. “I did not disrespect City fans,” he said. “Last year they had fun, so I copied.”
The 23-year-old’s comments refer to last season, when Manchester City defeated Real Madrid 2-1, a result that added fuel to the rivalry between the two European heavyweights. According to Vinícius, this year’s triumph represents a form of “remontada,” a comeback both on the pitch and in spirit.
Madrid’s dominant performance over two legs saw them comfortably eliminate the last year’s defending champions, with Vinícius playing a key role in the attacking display.
