‘Feeling suffocated and insulted’, Pradyut Bordoloi said after joining BJP
Standing on the threshold of Assam Assembly elections 2026, Congress has suffered another major setback in the state. Senior party leader and Lok Sabha MP Pradyut Bordoloi formally joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Wednesday, March 18. After joining BJP in the presence of Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and State President Dilip Saikia, Bordoloi made sharp attacks on the Congress leadership. He clearly said that he was feeling ‘suffocated’ and ‘humiliated’ in Congress for a long time, due to which he had to break the decades-old relationship.
Pradyut Bordoloi cited the main reason for leaving Congress as the ignoring of his views and abusive behavior within the party. Referring specifically to a meeting of the screening committee, he alleged that when he presented evidence of a candidate’s criminal connections, it was dismissed as false and fabricated. According to Bordoloi, this insult in the presence of the top leadership of the party forced him to take rebellious steps.

Bordoloi’s attack on Imran Masood
Pradyut Bordoloi directly targeted Saharanpur MP and Assam Screening Committee member Imran Masood. He said, ‘A communal leader like Imran Masood declared the evidence given by me as fake in front of everyone. The most sad thing was that the President of Assam Congress and other big leaders were present there but no one defended me. Bordoloi said emotionally that there is no room left for the self-respect of experienced leaders in Congress.
On the questions raised after the defection, Pradyut Bordoloi made it clear that his resignation was not just about ticket distribution. He said, ‘I still have three years of tenure left as a Lok Sabha member. If I was only interested in power, I would have remained an MP even after facing humiliation, but it is more important for me to live with my head held high. Interestingly, soon after Bordoloi’s resignation, Congress has declared his son as its candidate from Margherita assembly seat, which is being seen as an attempt to keep the family simple.

Priyanka Gandhi Vadra’s reaction
This defection has increased the problems of Congress before the voting on 126 seats of Assam on April 9. Before Pradyut Bordoloi, former state president Bhupen Kumar Bora has also joined BJP. On this development, Congress General Secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra said, ‘This is very unfortunate. I believe he was angry about ticket distribution. I wish we had got a chance to talk to him about this.
