US loses more than a dozen MQ-9 Reaper drones in operations against Iran

In a significant development amid the ongoing US-Iran conflict, US officials have confirmed that more than a dozen MQ-9 Reaper drones — each valued at approximately $16 million — have been destroyed during military operations targeting Iran.

According to a report from ABC News published on March 17, 2026, two senior US officials revealed that these unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) were lost either to Iranian surface-to-air missiles or destroyed on the ground by incoming fire. The MQ-9 Reapera versatile drone used for both reconnaissance and precision strikes, has played a key role in the campaign, providing real-time intelligence and launching attacks on Iranian military assets.

Heavy Drone Losses Highlight Risks in Iran Conflict

The losses represent a substantial blow to US unmanned aerial capabilities in the region. Earlier reports from other outlets, including CBS News, indicated around 11 Reapers downed in the initial phases of operations, with numbers climbing as the conflict — referred to in some sources as Operation Epic Fury — intensified. The total cost of the destroyed drones is estimated in the hundreds of millions of dollars.

Despite these setbacks, the Reapers have been instrumental in minimizing risks to manned US aircraft by conducting deep strikes into Iranian airspace, targeting mobile missile launchers, parked aircraft, and other high-value assets. US Central Command has released footage showing successful Reaper operations, underscoring their continued importance even as Iran demonstrates effective air defense countermeasures.
