Semiconductor tycoon Jason Chang’s wealth doubles to $14.2B, making him Singapore’s richest man

He was born in May 1944 in Shanghai, China, but as his family relocated to Taiwan, he grew up there and studied electronic engineering at National Taiwan University, before earning a Master of Science in industrial engineering from the Illinois Institute of Technology.

His mother, Chang Yao Hung-Ying, was a businesswoman in the real estate development sector and the founder of Hung Ching Development & Construction, according to Bloomberg.

In 1984, Chang persuaded his mother to invest in the semiconductor industry, leading to the founding of Advanced Semiconductor Engineering with his younger brother, Richard Chang.

In a 2011 interview, Chang described his mother as the heroine of ASE Group, noting that she sold her properties to support the company during losses in its first three years.

Advanced Semiconductor Engineering was listed in Taiwan in 1989 and in New York in 2000.

In 2018, it acquired fellow Taiwanese semiconductor manufacturer Siliconware Precision. Both firms were subsequently delisted, and their holding entity, ASE Technology Holding, began trading in Taiwan and New York.

The bulk of Chang’s wealth stems from his stake in ASE Technology. The testing and packaging provider operates manufacturing facilities across Asia, Europe and the United States, according to the company’s website.

As of April 30, 2025, Chang holds about 22% of the company, based on a Taiwan stock exchange disclosure.

Disclosures as of April 2025 also show that he owns roughly 49% of Sino Horizon and 31% of Hung Ching Development & Construction, both Taiwan-listed real estate development units under the ASE Group.

Last year, ASE Technology reported consolidated revenue of about $20.8 billion, up 8% from about from 2024, driven by increasing demand for AI chips.

Chang is married and has three children. His personal details, however, is limited in public records. Chang holds Singapore citizenship while maintaining primary residence in Taipei, Taiwan.
